This is the most grandiose fountain construction of Peterhof. The Grand Cascade together with the Grand Palace forms the compositional centre of the Lower park, the central axis of the «Russian Versailles». Peter the Great himself was the designer and author of the first sketches, drafts of the world's greatest fountain system. In his decrees many instructions were found of how and where the fountains, cascades and water amusements should be erected.

The main compositional parts of the Grand Cascade, with an area more than 3,000 sq.m, include the upper grotto and two waterfall staircases to¬gether with the lower grotto, culminating in a massive stone cup at the bot¬tom. The water mass of 142 fountains crashes down to this cup.

In the middle of the cup there is a gilded statue of Samson forcing open the jaws of a lion (height -3 m, weight - 51). A water jet shoots upfrom the lion's mouth to a height of 20 m. Allegorically, in the biblical figure of Samson, the creator of sculptural group M. Kozlovsky had in mind Peter the Great, the victor over Swedish King Karl. The lions around pedestal symbolize the four points of the compass of the world amazed by the Samson's victory.

Peterhof, one of the most visited Russian attractions, will win your heart with its romantic atmosphere and picturesque views. It is also an engineering state-of-the-art system as all the fountains work just like it was 300 years ago.
